Not Able to Run DirectSound Programs from DVD Drive on Windows 2000 (289236)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run a DirectSound-enabled program from the DVD drive on a Dell, Compaq, or Gateway computer, the audio does not work correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Portcls.sys file does not permit the use of non-PCM wave formats. DirectSound always interfaces with the Portcls.sys file, which only supports PCM. Software DVD players require the use of non-PCM formats to play content such as digital audio.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
