FIX: Remote Clients Can Start COM Server Even When DCOM Is Disabled (289116)

SYMPTOMS

Remote clients can start Component Object Model (COM) Servers even when Distributed COM (DCOM) is disabled on the server computer. The COM client that starts this server receives the RPC_E_CALL_REJECTED error "Call was reject by callee" (0x80010001), but the server process is started nonetheless. This is evident when you look at the Task Manager on the server computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

This fix is included after COM+ build 2000.2.3475.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

You can disable DCOM through Dcomcnfg.exe or Component Services:
  • Using Dcomcnfg.exe, follow these steps:
    1. From the Windows Start menu, click Run, type Dcomcnfg.exe, and then click OK.
    2. On the Default Properties tab, clear the Enable Distributed COM on this computer check box.
  • Using Component Services, follow these steps:
    1. From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and click Component Services.
    2. Click to expand the Component Services and Computers nodes.
    3. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    4. On the Default Properties tab, clear the Enable Distributed COM on this computer check box.
