When you open a workbook and then close it with out making any changes, you are prompted as follows:
Do you want to save the changes to Filename.xls?
Microsoft Excel recalculates formulas when opening files last saved by an earlier version of Excel.
CAUSE
By default, Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and Microsoft Excel 2002 recalculate files that were last saved in an earlier version of Excel. This ensures that any improvements made to the Excel calculation engine are applied to all formulas in the workbook.
RESOLUTION
To prevent Excel 2003 or Excel 2002 from automatically recalculating workbooks saved in earlier versions, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
NOTE: The Options command is only available when a workbook is open. If it is not available, click New on the File menu, and then click Blank Workbook in the New Workbook task pane. - Click the Calculation tab. Under Calculation, click Manual. Click to clear the Recalculate before save check box.
- Click OK.
