XFOR: Exchange 5.5 Users Cannot Reply or Send to Exchange 2000 Contacts (289081)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, when used with:
    • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q289081

SYMPTOMS

The following behaviors occur in a mixed-mode environment with Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 5.5:
  • Mailbox users on the Exchange Server 5.5 cannot reply or send messages to contacts brought in to the global address list (GAL) by a connector to a foreign mail system on an Exchange 2000 server. They will receive an non-delivery receipt (NDR) similar to the following message:
    From: System Administrator
    Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 12:17 PM
To: contact dirsynced in by exchange2000
    Subject: Undeliverable: RE: test

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

    Subject: RE: test
    Sent: 1/31/2001 12:17 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

contact dirsynced in by exchange2000 on 1/31/2001 12:17 PM
The recipient name is not recognized
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a= ;p=microsoft;l=servername-010131181649Z-10
    MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:exchange organization name:exchange server name
  • As viewed from the Exchange 5.5. Administrator, the custom recipient has no X.400 address. As viewed from the Exchange 2000 System Administrator, the contact has no X.400 address. If an X.400 address is added to the contact and the Active Directory Connector (ADC) replicates this to the Exchange 5.5 server, new messages and replies function correctly.
  • When the administrator runs the Recipient Update Service, the following error appears in the Application log on the Exchange 2000 server:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeSA
    Event Category: General
    Event ID: 2027
    Date: 1/31/2001
    Time: 3:30:06 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: ALANEW10

    Description:
Unable to generate the e-mail address. Unable to load address module 'C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\address\SNADS or PROFS\i386\ibmpxgen.dll' for address type 'SNADS or PROFS'. Error 0xc007007e.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because there is no .dll file to generate the proxy address for either the Microsoft Exchange Connector for SNADS or Microsoft Exchange Connector for IBM OfficeVision/VM (PROFS); the X.400 address is also not generated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior:
  1. Navigate to the \Exchsrvr\Address directory.
  2. Create a directory for the Exchange SNADS Connector and/or the Exchange PROFS Connector in the Address directory of the Exchange 2000 server.
  3. Create an \I386 directory under the Exchange SNADS and/or PROFS Connector directory.
  4. Copy the Ibmpxgen.dll file from the Exchange 5.5 server with the Exchange SNADS or PROFS Connector to the new directory. The Ibmpxgen.dll file can be found in the Address\Snads\i386 directory of the Exchange 5.5 server.
