PUB2002: Cannot Update Linked Graphic Inserted from a Web Server (289056)

SYMPTOMS

If you insert a picture from a file located on a Web server, and make it a link, the picture will not update when the original picture on the Web server is modified.

If you attempt to manually create a link to a picture that is on a Web server by using Graphics Manager, the following error message appears:
You cannot use an Internet address here. Enter a path that points to a location on your computer or on the network.

CAUSE

Pictures stored on a Web server are automatically embedded into a publication. Microsoft Office programs do not support linking to files on Web servers; they only support linking to files on the local hard disk or on a network path.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
