PUB2002: Portion of Numbered List Consists of Symbols (289019)

This article was previously published under Q289019 SYMPTOMS
When you create a Microsoft Publisher 2002 publication that contains a list with both bullets and numbers, and you then attempt to change the entire list to a numbered list, the bullets are changed into symbols that are neither numbers nor bullets.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Publisher uses characters from the symbol font as bullets and from the default font as numbers. When you attempt to change the bullets to numbers, the bullets retain the symbol font style and are changed to a different symbol instead of being changed into numbers.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- Select the entire list.
- On the Format menu, click Indents and Lists.
- In the Indents and Lists dialog box, click Numbered list to select this option, and then click Numbered list again to clear it.
- Select the Number settings that you want, and then click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
