This article was previously published under Q289015 SYMPTOMS
When you open a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) file in Microsoft Publisher, you may receive an error message similar to the following
Microsoft Publisher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
and then Publisher quits unexpectedly.
When you attempt to open the HTML file in Microsoft FrontPage, the file opens as expected.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when you insert a table with two or more cells into a Publisher publication, format a diagonal (click Cell Diagonals on the Table menu) into the table cells, and then insert two or more objects (such as HTML form controls) onto the right side of each diagonal.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, do not place more that one object onto the right side of a diagonal in a table cell if you want to save a Publisher publication as a Web page.
If you have already created such a publication, follow these steps to recover the document:
- Start FrontPage.
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Browse to find the file that you want, and then click the arrow next to the Open box.
- In the FrontPage window, click Normal (bottom left corner).
- Select the entire table, and then right-click.
- On the shortcut menu, click Delete Cells.
- On the File menu, click Save, and then quit FrontPage.
You can now open the HTML document in Publisher and make any changes that you want.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
