PUB2002: Text Is Not Trapped When You Print Separations (289003)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Publisher, when you print separations, trap settings may not be applied to some of the text in your publication as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur on a Microsoft Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)-based computer when you format text as bold by selecting the text and then clicking Bold on the Formatting toolbar.

When you do this, a bold effect is simulated onscreen by the Windows 98 Graphical Device Interface (GDI).

Publisher cannot interpret a proper trapping path from the way that Windows 98 simulates bold text effects, and therefore disables trapping for bold text by default.

NOTE: This behavior does not occur on Windows 2000-based computers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Select a similar font with a bolder font style, for example, Ariel Black instead of Arial. To change the font, follow these steps:
  1. Select the text that you want to format.
  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow next to the Font box.
  3. Click the font type that you want to use.
  4. Make sure that Bold is cleared in the Font style drop-down list.

Method 2

Use custom trapping. To use custom trapping, follow these steps:
  1. Select the text for which you want to create a custom trap.
  2. On the Tools menu, point to Commercial Printing Tools, point to Trapping, and then click Per Object Trapping.

    The Setting column displays the default trapping settings for the text.
  3. In the Text to background row, click the arrow in the Setting box, and then click Custom. Select the placement and the width of the trapping, and then click Close.
