Diagrams and AutoShapes are not imported from Microsoft Word (289002)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office Publisher 2003
- Microsoft Publisher 2002
- Microsoft Office Word 2003
- Microsoft Word 2002
This article was previously published under Q289002 SYMPTOMS
When you open a Microsoft Word document in Microsoft Publisher, any diagrams or AutoShapes that are in the document do not appear in Publisher.
Any text in the document opens as expected inside Publisher.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Microsoft Word 2002 and later versions of Word save AutoShapes and diagrams in a format that is compatible with previous versions of Word. Microsoft Publisher 2002 and later versions of Publisher cannot interpret this format. Therefore, Publisher 2002 and later versions of Publisher do not import AutoShapes and diagrams from documents that were created in Word 2002 and in later versions of Word.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, save the Word document as a Rich Text Format file (.rtf file), and then open the file in Publisher, complete with the diagrams and AutoShapes. To save a Word document as an .rtf file, follow these steps:
- Start Word, and then open the document that you want to open in Publisher.
- On the File menu, click Save As.
- In the Save As dialog box, in the Save as type box, click Rich Text Format, and then click Save.
