SYMPTOMS

If Windows NT Server 4.0 and Windows 2000 Server are installed on the same computer, and you attempt to load the system registry hive for Windows 2000 while running in Windows NT 4.0, you may receive a blue screen and the following error message:
STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0x801A8A83, 0x00000000, 0x00000024)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Address 801A8A83 has base at 80100000 - Ntoskrnl.exe

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, load a Windows 2000 system registry hive from another Windows 2000-based computer. To load the hive, you can either restart the computer in another parallel Windows 2000 install, or copy the system file (for the system registry hive) to a disk, and then load the file onto another Windows 2000-based computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Many servers are configured to dual boot two or more operating systems. For example, you may need to use a parallel install to recover another installation.
