SYMPTOMS

When you dial a connection on a client computer that is running Small Business Server (SBS) or BackOffice Server, and the connection uses a virtual COM port that is installed by the modem-sharing client software, you may receive one of the error messages described in this section.

If you are using Microsoft Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:
Dial-Up Networking was unable to complete connection.

Error 630:
The modem is not responding properly. Please verify that the modem is plugged in to the computer and to the telephone line. If the problem persists, please select 'More Help' button to start the Windows 98 Modem Troubleshooter.
If you are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, you may receive the following error message:
Opening port...

Error 633: The port is already in use or is not configured for Remote Access dial out.
If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, you may receive the following error message:
Opening port...

Error 797: The connection failed because the modem (or other connecting device) was not found. Please make sure that the modem or other connecting device is installed.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the modem-sharing client cannot query the modem that is connected to the server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Verify that the modem on the server is not being used by another service or program.
  2. If the modem that is being shared on the server that is running BackOffice Server or SBS is an external modem, verify that it is turned on, and that the serial cable is connected properly.
  3. Verify that the virtual port is connected to the correct server and shared modem pool.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
