Setup Stops Responding During Installation Or Upgrade to Windows 2000 (288873)

This article was previously published under Q288873 SYMPTOMS When you install or upgrade to Windows 2000, setup may stop
responding during hardware detection or after the first system restart. The
screen may remain black and comma characters may appear on the
monitor.CAUSE This issue may occur if any of the following display
adapters is installed in the computer:
- The ATI Xpert 2000
- The ATI Xpert 128
- The ATI Rage 128
These display adapters are manufactured by ATI Technologies
Inc. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, you must restart the computer in
Safe Mode, and then restore the generic VGA display adapter driver. To do this,
follow these steps:
- Press the Reset button on the front panel of the computer
case.
If your computer does not have a Reset button, turn off and
then turn on the computer. - Press F8 when Please select the operating system to
start appears on the screen.
If other operating systems are
installed on the computer, use the arrow keys to select Microsoft
Windows 2000 and then press ENTER.
Note If only one operating system is installed, this menu may not
appear. If this applies to your installation, press F8 after the Power On Self
Test (POST) to activate this menu. - In the Windows Advanced Option Menu, use
the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press
ENTER.
- After you have successfully started Windows in Safe Mode,
click Start, click Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
- Double-click Display.
- Click the Settings tab, and then click the
Advanced button.
- Click the Adapter tab, and then click the
Change button.
- Change the display adapter to Standard
VGA.
- Restart the computer in Normal mode.
If these steps resolve the problem, contact the display adapter
manufacturer to obtain a Windows 2000 device driver. If you cannot
start the computer in Safe Mode, you may have to replace the physical display
adapter in the computer with one that is listed on the Windows 2000 Hardware
Compatibility List (HCL).
