SMTP Virtual Server Snap-in Is Not Present in Mobile Information Server (288867)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server
This article was previously published under Q288867 SYMPTOMS
When you follow the procedure described in the Mobile Information Server product documentation to forward all push messages from the Mobile Information Server computer to a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) smart host, the default SMTP virtual server may not be present in the Internet Services Manager snap-in.
CAUSE
This issue occurs if the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server System Management tools have been installed on the Mobile Information Server computer. In this case, the SMTP virtual server objects are now displayed in Exchange System Manager. On the Exchange 2000 computer, the "Directory to metabase" thread overwrites changes that are made in Internet Services Manager. However, on a Mobile Information Server computer, only Exchange System Manager is installed; Messaging and Collaboration services are not installed. Therefore, the SMTP virtual server is not modified to be used with Exchange 2000. If you want to modify the SMTP virtual server, the default SMTP virtual server must be available in the Internet Services Manager snap-in.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, when you need to administer the SMTP virtual server on a Mobile Information Server computer which has Exchange System Manager installed, add the SMTP virtual server objects back to the Internet Services Manager snap-in. To do so, run the following command, where c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv is the path to the Microsoft Internet
Information Services (IIS) version 5.0 installation folder:
regsvr32 c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\smtpsnap.dll
When you stop, and then restart the Internet Services Manager snap-in after Smtpsnap.dll is registered, the default SMTP virtual server is displayed.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
