SYMPTOMS

When you run either the ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter utility on a Windows 98-based computer, the utility may seem to finish, and then the utility may start again, running in a continuous loop.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have a Cydoor_CD.exe program installed on your computer. Both the ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter utilities are incompatible with the Cydoor_CD.exe program.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this behavior, remove the Cydoor_CD.exe program by referring to the information that your vendor provided to you.

To remove the Cydoor_CD.exe program manually:
  1. Rename the following files (usually found in the C:\Windows\System\ folder):
    • CD_clint.dll
    • CD_gif.dll
    • CD_swf.dll
    • CD_load.exe
    To rename the files:
    1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named box, enter the file name of the preceding files one at a time, and then click Find Now.
    3. Under the Name column, right-click the file, and then click Rename.
    4. Change the .dll file extension to "old", for example, rename the CD_clint.dll file to the CD_clint.old file.
  2. After you rename the files, rename the Adcache folder:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Windows Explorer, and then locate the Adcache folder (found in the C:\Windows\System\ folder).
    2. Right-click the Adcache folder, click Rename, and then change the name of the folder, for example, Oldadcache.
  3. Remove the Cydoor program, Cydoor Services, and the Cydoor run values from the Windows registry:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type: regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate the following keys in the registry, and then delete them:
      • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cydoor\
      • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cydoor Services\
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Cydoor=CD_Load.exe
