SUMMARY

Some applications may not need to have audio in the final output files. This article shows you how to capture a "video only" file with Windows Media Encoder version 7.0.

MORE INFORMATION

To capture a "video only" file with Windows Media Encoder, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Media Encoder.
  2. Click Broadcast, capture, or convert a file using the New Session Wizard, and then click OK.
  3. Click Capture audio or video from attached devices or computer screen, and then click Next.
  4. Under Video, select a video capture card, under Audio, select an audio capture card, and then click Next.

NOTE: Even though you are not going to be using audio, Windows Media Encoder version 7.0 requires that you select an audio device.
  5. Specify an output file, and then click Next.
  6. Select the appropriate option for how the output file will be distributed, either Web server or Media server, and then click Next.
  7. Click Create and Manage Profiles, and then click New.
  8. Type a new profile name, and then click Next.
  9. Select the appropriate target audience, and then click Next.
  10. In the Format box, under Audio frame, click 0 Kbps, 8kHz, mono, and then click Finish.
  11. Click Close.
  12. Select the profile that you created in step 8 from the profile list.
  13. Step through the remainder of the wizard.
  14. Click Start, and then start encoding.
NOTE: The Windows Media Format uses the audio track as a timing track for the file. Because of this, you cannot remove the audio track. The steps listed in this article allow for an audio track to be present, but, because there is no bit rate being used for the audio, all available data is being stored in the video and script streams (if present). To the client, the audio will be inaudible.
