SUMMARY

This article describes how to install virtual private networking (VPN) and how to create a new VPN connection in Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

MORE INFORMATION

A virtual private network connects the components of one network over another network. Virtual private networks accomplish this by "tunneling" through the Internet or another public network in a manner that provides the same security and features as a private network.

How to Install VPN

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  3. Click Communications, click Details, click to select the Virtual Private Networking check box, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK, and then click Yes to restart your computer.

How to Create a VPN Connection

After you have installed VPN, make a new connection in Dial-Up Networking.

NOTE: You need the host name or IP address to make this connection. Check with the administrator of the server to which you are trying to connect to get this information.
