XADM: How to Recover When the Server Running ADC Is Unavailable (288776)

SUMMARY

There may be situations in which the server that hosts the Active Directory Connector (ADC) is unavailable. This article tells you how to regain ADC functionality for the e-mail system. This article does not describe the details of whole server restores or system state restores.

The ADC consists of two main components, the ADC installation and the various connection agreements.

The ADC installation consists of files copied to the local computer and registry entries that were added to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSADC

The connection agreements themselves are held in the Active Directory under:

Configuration\Services\Microsoft Exchange\Active directory connections.

To recover from an unavailable ADC server, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

  1. Reset the computer account for the ADC server:
    1. Start Active Directory Users and Computers.
    2. Locate the ADC server computer account, right-click the computer account, and then click Reset Account.
  2. Bring the new server online and use the same server name.
  3. Install the ADC code by running the ADC Setup program, which can be found in the ADC folder on the Exchange Server 2000 CD.
The connection agreements that are held on the domain controller are now accessible and functional.

Method Two

You may not have another computer readily available to follow Method 1. In such a case, follow these steps:
  1. Install the ADC code by running the ADC Setup program, which can be found in the ADC folder on the Exchange 2000 CD.
  2. Open the ADC snap-in.
  3. In the left pane of the snap-in, there are now two instances of the ADC. Click the instance where the connection agreements are held.
  4. With the appropriate ADC selected, in the right pane, double-click a connection agreement, and then click the General tab.
  5. There is a drop-down box that allows any server that contains an ADC installation to be selected to "own" a particular connection agreement. Choose the server on which you installed the ADC in step 2. Do this for all the connection agreements.
  6. On selection of a different server, you are prompted for the passwords for both the Windows account and the Exchange account used for that particular connection agreement. On completion, allow time for replication to complete between the domain controllers.
