XIMS: Message Cannot Be Sent to Domains with MX Record That Points to IP Address (288718)

If you configure the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server to use an external Domain Name System (DNS) server in the Advanced Delivery dialog box, messages to some domains may remain in the SMTP queue, and the queue status message may indicate the following:
The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt.
CAUSE
This problem can occur because domains that are configured as described in the "Symptoms" section of this article have a mail exchanger (MX) record that points to an Internet Protocol (IP) address on the DNS server. Although the IP address belongs to a valid host, Exchange 2000 Server does not process the DNS query result correctly in such a scenario.
