WD2001: Word Quits Without Error or Hangs When You Try to Open a Word 98 Document (288689)

When you open a Word 98 document in Word 2001 for Mac, Word 2001 may unexpectedly quit without an error message, or it may stop responding (hang) when it is starting.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, install Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac, Service Release 1. To download the Office 2001 SR-1 file, browse to the following Microsoft Web site:
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, disable the Allow Fast Saves option in Word 98, and then perform a full save of the document in Word 98. To do this, follow these steps. NOTE: These steps may not work in all cases.
- Start Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
- Open a document, and then select Preferences on the Tools menu.
- In the Preferences dialog box, click the Save tab, and then clear the Allow Fast Saves check box.
- Open the document that shows the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
- Make at least one change to the document, such as adding a space or other symbol, or making a formatting change.
- Save the document.
NOTE: With the Allow Fast Saves option turned off, the next time the document is saved, the document will complete a full save.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac, Service Release 1.
