XADM: Background Cleanup Errors During Information Store Shutdown Are Misleading (288648)

SYMPTOMS

When you stop the Information Store service on an Exchange 2000 server, the following error messages may be logged in the Event Viewer Application event log:
Event ID: 1101
Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store
Type: Error
Category: Background Cleanup
Description:
Error 0x3ed occurred on message 1-2C02 during a background cleanup on database ""First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (servername)


Event ID: 7200
Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store
Type: Error
Category: General
Description:
Background thread FBackgroundTimedEvent halted on database ""First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (servername)due to error code 0x3ed.
Despite these error messages, the information store shuts down cleanly.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because Exchange 2000 does not suppress these error messages when the store is shutting down. These error messages are misleading and do not indicate a problem. They can be safely ignored.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
