OL2001: News Link Error in Outlook 2001 (288518)

SYMPTOMS

If you click a newsgroup link in an Outlook 2001 for Mac message, you may receive the following error message:
The folder could not be opened. The client operation failed

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Outlook 2001 for Mac does not have Internet news client capability as a Microsoft Exchange Server client.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, configure a news client such as Microsoft Entourage or Microsoft Outlook Express, and then select it as the default news client in the Macintosh Internet Control Panel. You must have an Internet connection to use this resolution.

You may receive the following message during the installation of Outlook 2001 for Mac:

If you would like to use Microsoft Outlook as your default E-mail or News application, check the appropriate boxes below.

You can change these later in the Internet Control Panel.

Make Outlook my default E-Mail Application
Make Outlook my default News Application

If you click the Make Outlook my default E-Mail Application option, a new preaddressed e-mail form is created any time you click a Mailto: link on a Web page or in a message.

If you click the Make Outlook my default News Application option, Outlook 2001 for Mac is set as the default news reader.

How to Use the News Protocol

The Microsoft Exchange Server Public Folder Administrator has the option to configure a public folder that can be accessed by using the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) as well as a standard Microsoft Exchange Server folder. When you click the news link in the message, you can view the news-enabled folder with the news client specified as default.
