OL2001: Outlook 2001 Rules Can Be Used to Violate Anti-Coercion (288492)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q288492

SYMPTOMS

You can set up a rule to move messages to a folder that accepts items of another type in Outlook 2001 for Mac. This action violates the anti-coercion policy in Microsoft Outlook.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because a rule that is set up in this manner works independently of the anti-coercion behavior in Outlook 2001 for Mac.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, delete or modify the rule to move messages to a folder that stores messages.

If you create a rule that moves a message to a non-message folder, such as the Calendar, you can use one of the following two methods to retrieve the messages and restore them to a message folder.

How to Recover Messages by Using the Find Feature

In some cases you may know the sender of the message, but in others you may not. You can use the Find feature to locate messages that may be stored in non-message folders. Use the following steps to locate misfiled messages by using the Find feature:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Find Mail Message.
  2. In Find Mail Message, click From.
  3. In the Address Book, click the sender from the list, and then click From or Sent To as appropriate.
  4. Click Find Now. Messages that are in a non-message folder appear in the In Folder column of the results list.NOTE: It may be necessary to arrange the Find Mail Messages dialog box to full screen or resize the column headers to view the In Folder column header.

  5. If you do not know the sender of the message, you can click Sent Directly To Me and Copied (CC) To Me in a new search to assist in locating messages that were misfiled by the rule.

How to Use Outlook 8.x to Locate and Move Misfiled Messages

Previous versions of Outlook for Macintosh Exchange Server did not recognize Outlook special folders in the Macintosh Exchange Server user's mailbox. These folders appeared with generic item types. Use the following steps to use Outlook 8.x to move messages:

NOTE: Existing items that were created by Outlook 2001 for Mac or by an Outlook for Microsoft Windows client display generically when you view them in Outlook 8.x. To use this procedure, you must know the title of the message that was misfiled.
  1. Install Outlook 8.x and create a profile to connect to the mailbox with the misfiled messages.
  2. In the Folder List, click Calendar.
  3. Locate the misfiled items, drag them to a message folder such as your Inbox or a folder created as an e-mail folder.
  4. Exit Outlook 8.x., and then restart Outlook 2001 for Mac to view the moved items.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot drag items of one type to a folder that stores items of a different type in Outlook 2001 for Mac. For example, if you attempt to drag a message to the Calendar folder, the item returns to its original location.
