OL2001: Error Message: The File...Is Not Compatible with This Version of Microsoft Outlook (288487)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to access an offline folder (.ost) file with a version of Microsoft Outlook for Mac, Microsoft Exchange Server Edition, you may receive the following error message:
The file <Offline Folder name> is not compatible with this version of the Microsoft Outlook Offline Folders Information service. Contact your administrator.
NOTE: The behavior does not occur in Microsoft Outlook 2001, but in the Microsoft Outlook 8.x versions.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you are trying to access an .ost file that was created in Outlook 2001 for Mac. The .ost file architecture of Outlook 2001 is not compatible with any version of the Outlook 8.x.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, create a new .ost file and synchronize it with the server.
