OL2001: Office Files Receive Windows File Extensions (288457)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q288457

SYMPTOMS

If you drag a Microsoft Office file from a personal folders (.pst) file or a Microsoft Exchange Server folder to a location on your computer (such as your desktop) in Outlook 2001 for Mac, a file extension is appended to the file.

For example, a Microsoft Word document with the file name "MyFile" (without quotation marks) would read "MyFile.doc" (without quotation marks) when you create a copy of the file by dragging it to a location on your computer.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following two methods to work around this behavior:

  • Save the file directly from the attachment in the message.
  • Rename the file and remove the extension.

MORE INFORMATION

Both Outlook 2001 for Mac and the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) allow you to maintain information that can be viewed on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms. This ability in a multi-platform collaborative environment requires that a file extension be appended to the end of Office program files so that the programs in the Office family that are running on the Windows platform can properly open these files.

Files that are created with the following programs are affected:
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Powerpoint

How to Save Office Files Without Extensions

How to Save Files Directly

Use the following steps to save files from a folder or attachment in a message:
  1. In the folder that contains the file or in the message that contains the attachment, select the Office document.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save dialog box, browse to a location where you want to save the file, and then click Save.

How to Manually Edit the File Name

To edit the file name in order to remove the extension, click the file label in the Finder, and then delete the extension.
