SUMMARY
This article describes how to acquire, install, and remove the Active Directory Client Extension (DSClient) for Windows NT 4.0.
Note Although the DSClient is available on the Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating systems, this article concerns the Windows NT 4.0 version. Therefore, any reference to DSClient, unless otherwise stated, refers to the DSClient for Windows NT 4.0.
The DSClient takes advantage of features provided by the Windows 2000 Active Directory Service. These client extensions were developed for customers who want to deploy Windows 2000 Server in environments with Windows NT 4.0-based clients.
Acquire the DSClient
Windows NT
The DSClient for Windows NT 4.0 is freely available for download from the following Microsoft Web site:
Windows 98
The DSClient for Windows 98 is on the CD-ROM for Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Windows 2000 DataCenter Server.
The DSClient for Windows 98 is also freely available from the Microsoft Download Center.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
Install the DSClient
The prerequisites for the DSClient are:
- Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a.
- Internet Explorer 4.01 or later.
Download the DSClient.exe self-extracting executable installation file. Running this file will launch an installation wizard.

Remove the DSClient
The DSClient can be removed through the
Add/Remove Programs utility in
Control Panel:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Double-click Directory Services Client.
Note The following dynamic link libraries (DLLs) will not be removed:- Netlogon.dll
- Netapi32.dll
- Mup.sys
- Wkssvc.dll
- Wldap32.dll
All other DLL files will be removed. A reboot will be necessary if DLL files to be removed are currently in use.
