To Remove Template Listings

Microsoft Word stores the last two templates used or created and displays them in the New Document task pane.

You can remove the template listings by editing the registry. To remove a template listing from the New Document task pane, follow these steps.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Quit all Microsoft Office programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. In Registry Editor, select the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word

  5. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

    The Export Registry File dialog box appears.
  6. In the File name box, type C:\Export of Word key, and then click Save.
  7. Click Recent Templates.
  8. In the Name list, click the TemplateN value that corresponds to the template in the Data list that you want to remove (where N is a number).

    NOTE: The values in the Name list are displayed in alphanumeric order.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

    You receive a message. Click Yes.
  10. Click the FriendlyN value that is the same as the TemplateN value that you removed in step 8.
  11. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

    You receive a message. Click Yes.
  12. Rename any values in the Name list that are not in alphanumeric order. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the Name list, right-click the value that you want to rename.
    2. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Rename.
    3. Edit the number at the end of FriendlyN or of TemplateN to place the values in alphanumeric order.

      NOTE: The list should now appear similar to the following:
      Name        Data
      (Default)   {value not set}
      Friendly1   "Pleading Wizard"
      Friendly2   "Contemporary Report"
      Template1   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\Pleading Wizard.wiz"
      Template2   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\Contemporary Report.dot"
      						
  13. Quit Registry Editor.
  14. Restart the computer.

To Change the Number of Templates Listed

By default, only two templates are stored in the Most Recently Used list in the New Document task pane. This number can be changed by adding a value to the registry. To change the number of recently used templates displayed in the New Document task pane, follow these steps.

  1. Quit all Office programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. In Registry Editor, select the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common

  5. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

    Notice that the Export Registry File dialog box appears.
  6. In the File name box, type C:\Export of Common key, and then click Save.
  7. Click General.
  8. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  9. In the name box of New Value#1, type RecentTemplatesList, and then press ENTER.
  10. Right-click RecentTemplatesList, and then on the shortcut menu that appears, click Modify.
  11. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type the number of recent templates that you want displayed (up to a maximum of nine) in the Value data box. For example, type 5.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Quit Registry Editor.
  14. Restart the computer.
