The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q288278

SYMPTOMS

When you add a birthday or anniversary date to a contact that is stored in a local folder or public share, Outlook to stops responding or produce a fatal error (crash) when you click Save and Close.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because when you save a birthday or an anniversary date in a Contact record, Outlook tries to create a calendar event for this date. Because there is not a message store associated with this contact, the process fails and Outlook stops responding.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, save the birthday and anniversary date before you copy the contact to the folder.

If the contact already exists in the local folder or public share and you need to add the birthday or anniversary, copy the contact back into an Outlook folder, make the changes, and then drag the contact back to the local folder or public share.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
