OFFXP: Installation States in Transform Change After Changing Child Feature Installation States (288274)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage
- Microsoft Office XP Professional
- Microsoft Office XP Standard
This article was previously published under Q288274 SYMPTOMS
When you open a previously saved transform in the Custom Installation Wizard some of the installation states may not be the same as they were when you created the transform.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if you change the installation state of a feature to Installed on First Use and then change one of the child features of that feature to Run from Network. NOTE: This problem occurs most often with .msi files for the Multilingual User Interface Packs. By default, all of the top-level parent features in this .msi file are set to Installed on First Use.
The following steps demonstrate how this problem can occur:
- Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
- On the Open the MSI File page, locate and select the .msi file for Microsoft Office Professional with FrontPage. Click Next.
- On the Open the MST File page, select Create a new MST file. Note the name of the .mst file and click Next.
- On the Set Feature Installation States page, set the installation state for the Microsoft Word feature to Installed on First Use. Click Finish.
- On the last page of the wizard, where you see a sample command line, click Exit.
- Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
- On the Open the MSI File page, locate and select the .msi file for Microsoft Office Professional with FrontPage. Click Next.
- On the Open the MST File page, select Open an existing MST file.
- Select the .mst file you created in steps 1 through 5, and then click Next.
- On the Select the MST File to Save page, click Next. If you receive a prompt about overwriting the existing file, click Yes.
- On the Set Feature Installation States page, expand (click the plus sign "+" next to) the Microsoft Word feature.
- Change the installation state of the Page Border Art feature to Run from Network.
- Select the .mst file you created in steps 10 through 13, and then click Next.
- On the Select the MST File to Save page, click Next. If you receive a prompt about overwriting the existing file, click Yes.
- On the Set Feature Installation States page, expand (click the plus sign "+" next to) the Microsoft Word feature.
The installation states for the Help, Wizards and Templates, and Address Book features are set to either Run from My Computer or Run all from My Computer.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, reset the installation state for any features that were changed automatically by the Custom Installation Wizard. There is no way to prevent this behavior from occuring in the first place.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. REFERENCES
