SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to encrypt a file using the Encrypted File System (EFS), the encryption may not work, and you may receive the following error messages: Error message 1
Access is denied.
Error message 2
Event ID: 6019
Event Type: Error
Event Source: EFS
Event Category: None

Time: 05:13:00 AM

Description:
The file file name being encrypted is a special reparse file, which is not supported by this version of EFS.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the target file is stored on a partition on which either the hierarchical storage management method or the Single Instance Store feature has been used.

MORE INFORMATION

Any files that have been stored by means of the hierarchical storage management method or by using the Single Instance Store feature cannot be encrypted.
