SYMPTOMS
When Microsoft Visio connects to an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data source, you may receive the following error message:
ODBC Driver Error: State:01004,Native:5,Origin:[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]String data, right truncated
CAUSE
This error message may appear when the complete file path to the data source exceeds 132 (or more) characters. The drive letter or Universal Naming Convention (UNC) (\\servername\sharename), colon, backslashes, folder name, and file name all count as characters in the path to the source.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, try to shorten the complete file path of the data source to 131 characters or fewer. Suggestions for shortening the path include:
- Move the data source file closer to the root directory on the drive.
- Copy the network shared data source file to a local hard disk drive and place it in a folder that is close to the root directory.
- Create a network share name that is shorter in length.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
