Infinite Loop in "IP Resolution" Task of DTS Package (288235)

SYMPTOMS

When the server Internet Protocol (IP) configuration has no Domain Name System (DNS) server on the first Network Information Center (NIC) that executes the "IP Resolution" task of the Data Transformation Services (DTS) package, the IP Resolution DTS task stops responding (hangs).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a system-wide environment variable "NameServer" with the DNS server list.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Commerce Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Commerce Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in Commerce Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

This hotfix solves the problem in which the IP Resolution DTS task appears to hang. The apparent hang occurs because no DNS is defined on LANA0 (the first NIC in the system). When you apply this fix, the IP Resolution DTS task quits, and the following error is logged in the NT Application Event log:

To resolve the error condition, add the address(es) of the DNS server(s) in the following registry key:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters

where the value is as follows:

NameServer :REG_SZ: < space delimited list of dotted decimal IP addresses>
