Exchange Server Is Not Upgraded with NNTP Newsfeeds Installed (288190)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) version 4.5 to SBS 2000, one of the following symptoms may occur:
  • After Setup is finished, Microsoft Exchange Server may not be upgraded.
  • Exchange Server may not be selected to be upgraded in the Component Selection dialog box.
  • You may receive the following error message at the Component Selection dialog box:
    Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Setup Wizard
    The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Upgrade" because: - You cannot Upgrade an Exchange 5.5 server that has NNTP newsfeeds installed.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if a Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service newsfeed was added by using the Exchange Server version 5.5 Exchange Server Administrator program, and the newsfeed was not removed before you started the SBS 2000 upgrade.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue if you are running SBS 2000 Setup at the Component Selection dialog box:
  1. Click Cancel, and then click Yes to cancel Setup.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click Microsoft Exchange Administrator.NOTE: Note the settings for the newsfeed before you complete the following step.

  3. In the Connections container, click the newsfeed, and then press the DELETE key. When you are prompted with an "Are you sure you want to delete" message, click Yes.
  4. Quit the Exchange Server Administrator program.
  5. Double-click the drive that contains SBS 2000 disk 1 to start SBS 2000 Setup.
To resolve this issue if you have already completed the SBS 2000 upgrade:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click Microsoft Exchange Administrator.NOTE: Note the settings for the newsfeed before you complete the following step.

  2. In the Connections container, click the newsfeed, and then press the DELETE key. When you are prompted with an "Are you sure you want to delete" message, click Yes.
  3. Quit the Exchange Server Administrator program.
  4. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  5. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  6. Click Microsoft Small Business Server 2000.
  7. Click Change/Remove.
  8. Follow the instructions in the wizard to finish the installation. In the Component Selection dialog box, Exchange Server should be selected to be upgraded.
BackOffice Server 2000 does not require that Exchange Server 5.5 be upgraded to Exchange 2000 Server; however, if you choose to upgrade Exchange Server, the steps in the "Resolution" section of this article also apply.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Small Business Server 2000.
