Plug and Play Event Processing May Stop Functioning After the Surprise Removal of Certain PCI Devices (288113)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
This article was previously published under Q288113 SYMPTOMS
If a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) device is removed from a fault-tolerant system, the PCI driver may cause Plug and Play event processing to stop responding (hang) when certain devices are unexpectedly removed ("surprise removal").
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the PCI driver acquires a mutex when the PCI driver receives the surprise removal I/O request packet (IRP). Under certain conditions, the PCI driver releases this mutex twice, which causes the thread that processes the plug and play events to hang the next time that this mutex is acquired.
