You receive a "You Do Not Have the Necessary Permissions" error message when you import or link a Hotmail folder in Access 2002 (288001)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to import or link a Microsoft Hotmail Inbox into an Access database, you receive the following error message:
You do not have the necessary permissions to use the " object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this object establish the appropriate permissions for you.

CAUSE

The Outlook/Exchange ISAM driver opens a MAPI connection to Microsoft Access with read-only permissions.

RESOLUTION

Download all the messages in the Hotmail folder before you try to link or import.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Start Microsoft Outlook 2002.
  2. Set up an account for reading Hotmail within Outlook. You may need to create a profile for your Hotmail account.
  3. Start Microsoft Access.
  4. On the File menu, point to Get External Data, and then click Import.
  5. In the Files of Type dialog box, click Outlook.
  6. Click the Hotmail folder, and then click the Inbox.

    Note that you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
