This article was previously published under Q287869 SYMPTOMS
If you compose a new message in Microsoft Outlook Rich Text format (RTF) by using Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor and you insert a smart tag in the message, the recipient does not see the smart tag when they receive the message.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the Outlook Rich Text format does not support smart tags.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format to send smart tags.
MORE INFORMATION
The recipient that receives the message without the smart tags can choose to scan the document for smart tags if they are using Microsoft Office 2002. If the recipient clicks the Tools menu, clicks Options, and then clicks the Mail Format tab, they can read RTF messages with Word.
