An Error Message Is Displayed When Your Computer Is Released from Standby or Hibernation Mode While an .asf File Plays (287719)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1

This article was previously published under Q287719

SYMPTOMS

If you put your computer into either Standby or Hibernation mode while you play any Advanced Streaming Format (.asf) audio file in Windows Media Player, and then you remove your computer from either Standby or Hibernation mode, you may receive the following error message:
Wmplayer has caused an error in Wmvcore.dll.
Wmplayer will now close.

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer.
When you click OK to clear the error message, Windows Media Player closes, and you may receive the following error message:
Wmplayer caused an exception 10H in module Wmvcore.dll at 017f:739253c6

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your computer supports the S3 power state (the Standby mode). If your computer does not support the S3 power state, Windows defaults to the S1 power state (the Suspend mode) and the behavior does not occur.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you must not play the .asf file before you put your computer into either the Standby or the Hibernation mode.
