SUMMARY

If you are running multiple Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual servers on a single computer, you can configure each server to respond with a different host name in the service banner. For example, you might have a dual-homed server with one network adapter on the private network and the other network adapter exposed to the Internet.

MORE INFORMATION

To have a server respond with a different host name in the service banner, follow these steps:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. Expand the Administrative Groups object, expand the <site name> object, and then expand the Servers object.
  3. Expand the server object that you want to host the extra virtual servers, and then expand the Protocols object.
  4. Right-click SMTP, point to New, and then click SMTP Virtual Server.
  5. Assign a name to the new SMTP virtual server, and then assign it to a specific IP.
  6. After the SMTP virtual server object is created, right-click the object, and then click Properties.
  7. Click the Delivery tab, and then click Advanced.
  8. Edit the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to reflect the host name that you want to appear in the service sign-on banner.
  9. Right-click the new virtual server, click Stop, and then restart it.
  10. To test the new name, click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type telnet <IP address> 25.
