All messages are marked unread after you start Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2002 (287609)

This article was previously published under Q287609 SYMPTOMS When you start Outlook, you may experience the following
symptom:
- The messages in the Inbox display the correct status (read
or unread).
- Each message has a duplicate copy appear in the Inbox
folder (unread).
- All the duplicate copies disappear and all the messages
become unread.
CAUSE This behavior may occur if one of the following conditions
is true:
- The Outlook profile contains at least two services:
Microsoft Exchange Service and Internet Mail Service. -or-
- The Internet Mail Service Post Office Protocol version 3
(POP3) server is pointed to the same Exchange server as Microsoft Exchange
Service.
The Internet Mail Service re-downloads all messages from the
server and places them in your Inbox folder. RESOLUTION To resolve this behavior, delete the Internet Mail Service
from the Outlook profile.
