XADM: How to Stop Replication of Disabled Gateway Proxies Between Connected Sites (287605)

When you install the first Exchange 2000 server in an Exchange Server 5.5 site, the Disabled-Gateway-Proxy attribute from other connected pure Exchange Server 5.5 sites is not replicated. This creates a problem because when you create a Recipient Connection Agreement to such sites, all default gateway proxy addresses are replicated to Active Directory.
CAUSE
The Disabled-Gateway-Proxy attribute is not replicated between sites by default because the lowest significant bit is set for this attribute in the schema. If you edit the schema on each of the servers and clear this bit in the heuristic for this attribute, and then restart the directory service, the disabled proxy information will replicate correctly from one Exchange Server 5.5 computer to another. This must be changed only on the bridgehead servers for each site.
WORKAROUND
To avoid unwanted replication of disabled proxy addresses between the Exchange Server 5.5 directory and Active Directory, you need to enable replication of the Disabled-Gateway-Proxy attribute between sites.
WARNING: If you use the raw mode of the Exchange Server Administrator program ( admin /r) incorrectly, serious problems may occur that may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows NT Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from using raw mode incorrectly can be solved. Use raw mode at your own risk.
To enable replication of this attribute:
- Start the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program in raw mode (admin /r) and connect to the directory replication bridgehead server for each site.
- On the View menu, click Raw Directory to open the Schema.
- In the left pane, click Schema, and then locate the Disabled-Gateway-Proxy attribute in the right pane.
- Double-click Disabled-Gateway-Proxy. You receive the following warning:
The Administrator program can display only raw data for objects of this type. Do you want to view raw properties for this object?
- From the Disabled-Gateway-Proxy property page, click Heuristics. The Edit value should be 13, or an odd integer. Reset the lowest significant bit to 0, then click Set, click Apply, and then click OK to return to the schema.
This setting allows the Disabled-Gateway-Proxy attribute to replicate between sites. If you do this before you install the first Exchange 2000 server, it will stop any unnecessary replication of the unwanted proxy addresses. If you have already installed Exchange 2000, the Configuration Connection Agreement will replicate this attribute and clear the extra e-mail addresses from Active Directory after replication finishes.
