PRB: ExOLEDB Provider Cannot Access or Create Items Remotely (287534)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q287534

SYMPTOMS

When using the Exchange OLE DB Provider (ExOLEDB) to create an ADO connection to a remote Exchange Server, you may encounter errors if you attempt to access or create objects on that server.

CAUSE

ExOLEDB, installed by Exchange 2000 Server setup, is a server-side provider only. ExOLEDB can only be used to access or create items on the local Exchange Server.

RESOLUTION

Client-side applications can access or create items on a remote Exchange 2000 Server by using either MAPI, CDO 1.x, WebDAV (XMLHTTP) or ADO with the Microsoft Internet Publishing Provider (MSDAIPP).

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
