The System Restore Utility Restarts with an Unsaved Open Document (287507)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q287507 SYMPTOMS
If you run the System Restore utility with an open document and the System Restore Wizard prepares for the shutdown of your computer, you may briefly receive the following message:
Save changes to Document?
However, you may not have enough time to save and close the document before the shutdown process begins. All of the changes previously made to the open document are lost.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because the System Restore utility is unable to guarantee the order in which programs are to be closed. The computer is forced to shut down, including the System Restore Wizard, so that the system can complete the Restore process.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, users must save and close any opened documents when initially prompted. When users view the Confirm Restore Point Selection dialog box of the System Restore Wizard, they receive the following warning message:
Important: Before continuing, save your changes and close any open programs
When this warning message is displayed, users must save and close any opened documents, and then proceed with the restoration process.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
