With Browser Configured for Proxy Server, Cannot Perform Remote Administration of Local Web Site (287427)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt remote administration of a local Web site, and your Web browser is configured to use a Proxy Server, you may receive the following error message when Internet Explorer attempts to open the Internet Service Manager:
Internet Explorer could not open the Internet site http://localhost/admin/default.asp.
The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the browser is configured to use the Proxy Server for both local and remote addresses.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, configure Internet Explorer to bypass the Proxy Server for local addresses.

  1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
  2. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
  3. Click Bypass proxy server for local addresses.
  4. Click OK in the open dialog boxes to close them and to save the new settings.
