SUMMARY

This article discusses the licensing issues involved in upgrading the Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) version of Microsoft Exchange Server to Exchange Server 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

To upgrade from the SBS version of Exchange Server to Exchange Server 5.5, you will need to purchase the Exchange Server 5.5 minor version upgrade (SKU #312-00692) and Exchange Server upgrade Client Access Licenses (CAL) equal to the number of client licenses that you have for BackOffice Small Business Server. If you need to add more users to the network, beyond the 25-client limit, you will also need to upgrade to the full version of Windows NT Server 4.0. The information stored on your existing SBS Exchange Server will be preserved and migrated when you upgrade to Exchange 5.5.

NOTE: You cannot upgrade the 25-client, not-for-resale (NFR) version of SBS to Windows NT Server 4.0. You can only upgrade the retail version of Small Business Server when the number of client licenses are at 25 or more. You cannot upgrade SBS 4.0 to Windows NT 4.0 if you have fewer than 25 client licenses.
