256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
SYMPTOMS
Users who have reached the mailbox limit that is defined by the mailbox_quota attribute may experience the following behavior:
- The address book is deleted whenever the user logs on to a WebMail account or attempts to update the address book.
- Message operations fail. For example, deleted messages are not copied to the Deleted Items folder, and new messages are not delivered or saved in the Sent Items folder.
No warning is generated for these occurrences.
CAUSE
If the quota is exceeded during the address book update process, the address book is deleted and because the quota was exceeded it is not possible to create a replacement. Attempts to move, copy, or save copies of e-mail messages within the mailbox also fail because it is not possible to create items when the quota has been exceeded. The user receives no notification of the quota exhaustion.
NOTE: The address book is stored as a message in the user's mailbox under a hidden folder.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, advise end customers of the service of this limitation, or do not implement mailbox quotas.
RESOLUTIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk. A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Commercial Internet System service pack that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name Platform
--------------------------------------------------------------------
06/11/2001 10:55 AM 8.0.400.0 264,464 Renobj.dll x86
05/15/2001 11:46 AM 8.0.399.0 310,544 Wmailobj.dll x86
After you apply this hotfix, two additional changes are required:
- You must make changes to the Header.asp page to provide the error message to the user. You can make these changes by using the following code:
<%
if Session("RenderingObject").QuotaReached = TRUE then
%>
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JAVASCRIPT>
alert("To send or receive any further e-mail messages, you must free up mailbox space. You can free up mailbox space by deleting old messages, and then emptying your deleted items folder.");
</SCRIPT>
<%
end if%>
- To prevent the address book from being deleted when the quota is exceeded, you must set the address book registry value to 1.
To add the registry value, follow these steps:
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious,
system-wide problems that may require a reinstall of Windows NT
to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems
resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
this tool at your own risk.
- Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MCIS25\HMI
- In the data tree, select the address book. On the Edit menu, click DWORD and type 1 as the value.
A value of 1 (DWORD) forces a test to be performed prior to updating the address book. This prevents it from being deleted when the quota is exceeded. The additional property of the rendering object, Quotareached, is also enabled. - Quit Registry Editor.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Commercial Internet System 2.5.
