This article was previously published under Q286895

SYMPTOMS

After you apply a Numbered list style to a selection of text, duplicate formatting items appear in the Pick formatting to apply list in the Styles and Formatting task pane.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you apply a Bulleted list style to a text selection, and then you modify the Bulleted list style to a Numbered list style.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, re-apply the list style to the text selection. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Select the text to which you want the style re-applied.
  2. On the Format menu, click Styles and Formatting.
  3. In the Styles and Formatting task pane, in the Pick formatting to apply list, click the same formatting as that which appears in the Formatting of selected text box.
The formatting is re-applied to the text selection, and all duplicate formatting items are removed from the Pick formatting to apply list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
