A comment that you inserted in a Microsoft Word 2002 document is not visible when you open the document in Word 2000 (286881)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a comment into a Microsoft Word 2002 document, and then open that document in Word 2000, the inserted comment is not visible as expected.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: View Comments

After you open the file in Word 2000, click Comments on the View menu.

Method 2: Show Hidden Text

After you open the file in Word 2000, show the hidden text contained in the Word document. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, on the View tab, click to select the Hidden text check box, and then click OK.

Method 3: Select Text When You Insert Comments

If your Word 2002 document is to be opened in Word 2000, select a portion of text near the area of the document that you want to comment.

On the Insert menu, click Comment. Type your comment in the Comment balloon that appears.

When this Word 2002 document is opened in Word 2000, the comment is indicated by yellow-highlighted text. When you hover the mouse pointer over the text, the comment becomes visible.

MORE INFORMATION

In earlier versions of Word, comments were indicated by a portion of highlighted text near the comment. Word 2002 no longer requires that a comment be associated with a portion of the text in the document.
