This article was previously published under Q286873 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Word, when you create a table, drag text from one cell to another cell in the table, and then click Undo Move on the standard toolbar, the shape of the table unexpectedly changes.
The shape of the table changes more than would be expected from the change to the size of the cells that occurs with the addition or removal of text.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
- The text that you are dragging is vertical (rotated) text.
-and- - The text originates in a group of merged cells.
-and- - The table cells AutoFit behavior is set to AutoFit to contents.
-and- - The text is long enough to change the width of the cell that it is dropped into.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, when you want to move text from one cell of a table to another, use the Cut and Paste commands on the Edit menu instead of dragging the text. If you then click Undo Move, the table shape does not unexpectedly change.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
