WD2002: Unable to Restart Numbering When the Level Is Linked to a Style (286872)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to restart the numbering of a list, the Restart Numbering command may appear to have no effect, in which case, the numbering remains unchanged.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • A level in the numbering or outline list style is linked to the style.

    -and-
  • The same outline or numbering level is automatically updated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do not link the level to the style.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue and restart the numbering of items in a numbered list, follow these steps:
  1. Select all of the items in the list that you want to renumber.
  2. Right-click the selection.
  3. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Restart Numbering.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
