WD2002: Word Stops Responding After You Close Document Created from Template (286845)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q286845 SYMPTOMS
When you close a document in Microsoft Word that was created from a template, Word may stop responding (hang).
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
- The template is digitally signed.
-and- - This is the first time the document has been closed.
-and- - The template uses document variables.
-and- - One or more of the document variables has a name that sorts to a position after the word "Sign" in an ascending alphabetic sort operation.
If the document was saved successfully before you close it, the saved document can be opened and closed without this behavior recurring. However, every new document created with the template can cause Word to stop responding when the new document is closed for the first time.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, only use names for document variables in signed templates that sort to a position before the word "Sign" in an ascending alphabetic sort operation.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
