Error Message Appears During Hardware Detection Phase of Windows Me Installation (286334)

SYMPTOMS

During the hardware detection phase of Windows Millennium Edition (Me) installation, your computer may restart and then display these error messages:
Windows failed to run correctly you might be able to correct this problem by running system restore. If this does not fix the problem try reinstalling windows. vxd dynamic link call: apix (01......) service 3. If you continue your system may become unstable.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because a file in the IOSUBSYS is causing the computer to restart and display the error messages.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Start the computer in Safe Mode.
  2. Create a folder on the desktop, naming it Tempvxds.
  3. On the Start menu, click Run.
  4. Type IOSUBSYS, and then click OK.
  5. On the View menu, click Details.
  6. Click Modified to sort the list by date.
  7. Move all the files dated before 6/8/2000 to the new folder you created on the desktop.
  8. Restart the computer in Normal mode.

MORE INFORMATION

When Windows Me finishes the installation, there still may be some error messages that appear. Copy the files for those error messages into the IOSUBSYS. You may also have to reinstall drivers and software, depending on the error messages. If the original error message returns after you have moved a file back into the IOSUBSYS, you probably need to download a driver update for the device.
